WinSetView's Automatic Backup System
Every time you click Submit in WinSetView, it automatically backs up your current Windows registry folder view settings before making any changes. This means you always have a safety net — if you do not like the result, you can restore to exactly where you were before with one click.
Where Are Backups Stored?
Backups are stored in the WinSetView application folder — in a subfolder named Backups. Each backup file is named with a timestamp so you can identify when it was created.
How to Restore a Backup
Option 1 — WinSetView Restore Button: Open WinSetView and click the Restore button. A file picker opens showing your available backups — select the one you want to restore and click OK. WinSetView applies the backup and restarts Explorer.
Option 2 — Manual REG Import: Navigate to the Backups folder in your WinSetView directory. Double-click any .reg backup file. Click Yes on the registry import prompt. Restart Explorer manually (Task Manager → Explorer → Restart).
How to Reset to Windows Defaults
If you want to completely remove all WinSetView changes and return to pure Windows defaults — not a backup but actual factory defaults — use the Reset function:
This deletes all FolderTypes customizations and lets Windows manage folder views on its own again.
Best Practices for Backups
- Never delete backups unless you are certain you no longer need them
- Before experimenting with new settings, note the current backup timestamp
- Copy the Backups folder to a safe location when migrating to a new PC
